Words for Hymns on screen during broadcast conferences.

Post by jamesalance »

It would be amazing if the words to new and unfamiliar hymns could be broadcast along with the hymns during the broadcasts of conferences. Some don’t have access to the new hymns online, or can’t find them quick enough to sing along.

Interestingly enough, we actually tried that out just yesterday at a local building, but the time-lag on screen didn't quite sync for the members trying to sing along with the music. For talks it wasn't as big of a deal, but still a bit "off" when the speaker was an entire phrase or paragraph ahead of what was displayed on-screen.

Assuming the OP is referring to General Conference broadcasts, I don't know enough about these things to know if each "language broadcast" is using an identical video feed that then has a different audio overlay for the language being broadcast. If that's the case, then perhaps it's difficult to have different languages displaying the hymn words.

As an aside, I've always thought it would be helpful if the Church would share the list of congregational hymns for GenConf sessions beforehand. Especially with the current hymnbooks, it's a mad rush to try and figure out what the matching hymn name is in another language and then look that up (or look it up in English and then switch the language to Spanish/etc), and then let everyone else present know what name or hymn number it is for that language. Even when we get the new hymnal, it would just be nice if everyone knew beforehand what the hymn was going to be for that session, so that we weren't always joining in halfway thru the first verse...

That was the case when the church was on satellite, but I don't know if it's still the same. But I'd think they'd have the same issue with names and titles of the speakers.

You mean like adding it to Gospel Library? That would be nice, but I think in some parts of the world they watch conference a week later or on different days because of time zone issue. But yes, if there was a way to have some kind of virtual hymn board for GC...
