Procedure/Order When Sustaining Someone to Calling That Requires Priesthood Advancement
We had this question come up in a meeting and I haven't been able to find anything in the Handbook on this subject. The scenario is a brother who is currently an Elder is being called to the High Council. When he is sustained should he first be sustained to be ordained a High Priest and then be called to the position of High Councilor? Or does the order in which that happens matter?

For sustaining, I do not believe it really matters. Often times both will be included at the same time, i.e., it is proposed that Brother Jones be ordained a high priest and that we sustain him as a high councilor. They both need to happen.russjones wrote:Or does the order in which that happens matter?
But he does need to be ordained a high priest before he is set apart as a high councilor.

I agree for that scenario, they would usually add them both into the same sentence.
In my opinion, it would make sense that the person be called into office of High Priest as no one can be called a High Council without being a High Priest.
It is the same as keeping someone in the same calling until someone has been extended a calling to replace them, then being able to release such member with the new sustained member.
There should be order to these type of things.
So calling into a priesthood office that is prerequisite of a certain calling would have to come first, even if it is 30 seconds apart or in the same sentence.
We do it in setting apart, why not in sustaining callings over the pulpit as well.
