Tv's that have the software that come up with the church logo and connecting Phones and Tablets to them

Post by ELHawkes »

Hello, we have had a number of Tv's in the Stake Center converted to boot up with the Church Logo.
Below is an email that a bishop sent to us as STS.
Can anyone here answer the issue this bishop describes or point me to a thread that already answers the issue?
Thanks,
Brother Hawkes

Hello, Brethren!
I have complained about this before, but I think that I better understand what is happening now.
All tvs that I have tried will display if you are using a computer attached to the tv with an HDMI cable.

Some tvs will display if you are connected with a phone or tablet using the HDMI cable and the appropriate adapter for the device.
BUT, some will not.

As near as I can tell, those tvs that have the software that come up with the church logo and lets you select which HDMI port to use DO NOT work for phones and tablets. At least they don't work with my iPhone and iPad.

The tvs in the Relief Society room and the High Council room do not come up with the "Church screen" and they will work with my devices.
The roving tvs in the library, 25th Ward Bishop's office do not work and have the "Church screen". I think that Bishop O has the same problem in the 21st Ward Bishop's office.

Can you please check into this? If it can't be resolved, then I would like to dump the Church screen.
Thank you!
Bishop C

This is the first I've of any TVs with a "church configuration". I'm going to guess that a prior TS configured the TVs somehow and tried to lock them down.

It's possible that the TV set is lower resolution and the adapter is refusing to go into a compatible mode. I'd start by trying to verify the complaint using a laptop.

These are new TVs or existing TVs being installed or modified by the FM group, so it's not a prior TS that would have modified them.
I just sent an email to our FM to see what insight he might be able to provide if any.

We have one of these LG TV's in my building here, and the casting feature is pretty hard to use. I found the setup instructions here: https://tech.churchofjesuschrist.org/wi ... _Guide.pdf

The MAC address had been put in the CMN policy wrong, so I fixed that, but trying to cast to the TV from my phone doesn't really work. It will display a QR code that doesn't scan with most apps, though the one I did find that would read the code told me it was for a WIFI network with no name but had a password. I could manually use that password to connect to the TV, but every time you turn the TV off/on, the password changes and you have to manually decode the password and manually join the network setup by the TV to try and cast to it. I haven't tried HDMI or PC casting yet.

With these new TVs that boot up with the church logo, I found that with my Android phone, using the TV screen share option is quite straightforward to wirelessly cast my phone screen to the TV. There is no QR codes needed or passwords.
See attached photos.

I also noticed that these new TVs come with a generic remote instead of the factory LG remote.

This is where I select the cast function on my Android phone, see attached photo.

That's what I tried and how I would expect it to work, however the one in our building doesn't seem to function correctly. I'm wondering if it not having internet access (because the MAC was wrong in CNM) during setup caused it to miss an update or not provision correctly. In your picture, you can see the Google Cast option, which is what I had selected, but the TV in my case is in the Primary room and the screen is a bit different. I'll try to remember to snap a pic.

Using the steps in the file I shared, I was able to get into the TV menu and fix some things.

The TV did not have a location set I selected Primary and this made it work much better. I also set the property code that was just all 00000 to the correct value. Now the network it shares has a name (Primary) and the QR codes work and phones connect. I also tried from Windows 11 Laptop and that was able to connect wirelessly as well.

So, if you have problems, check the setup page and make sure it was configured correctly.

This particular TV has issues dropping the connection after a few minutes of broadcasting, but I think it's just getting very poor wireless signal as it's on an exterior wall and only shows 1 bar of signal.
