General Conference Music Idea

Our family struggles at finding the hymns during general conference when it's the congregations turn to sing with the choir, mostly because they don't give out hymn numbers and we're search for the title in the app. Yes I know you can search by the title but we all know searching by 3 numbers is much faster than typing in a few words. But that's not the point of this message.

I'm here today to pass a great idea along that might already be in the works. What if the calling over the music numbers over general conference had the ability to enter in these hymns just like local wards do, and so when we're in general conference sessions it would put these songs in the Gospel library app just like it does on sacrament meetings?

Sure it would need to do it for Saturday sessions and we would have two sessions Saturday and two on Sunday, do we put both session music numbers in the app at once, do we have it switch in the two hour downtime? But it would be so helpful to many members in the world, especially if it could switch languages and show the hymns in Spanish or other languages automatically to help those know what songs they should be singing since they stopped putting the words on the screen ...

There's my idea, destroy it if you want but I thought it would help many if we could find a way to implement it for those two times a year we would use it.

I like the idea, but a potential challenge is that not everyone watches general conference on the same day. When the time zone is significantly different from Mountain Time, conference sessions happen in the middle of the night. Wards may still hold sacrament meeting that day, and watch conference in the evening or on the following Sunday, or they might just have members watch conference on their own time. There are a lot of potential ways to solve this, but it likely wouldn't be as smooth as simply replacing the sacrament meeting hymns card on conference weekend. Personally, I'd love to see a general conference feature in Gospel Library that leverages Live Activities (iOS) or Live Updates (Android) to show the current speaker, the hymns, etc. as they're happening.

In addition, the current hymnbooks are not numbered the same world-wide.

It's not impossible, but does complicate things.

It's also possible that once they issue the new hymnal with unified numbering, they might begin announcing hymn numbers for congregational singing during GenConf sessions. That would alleviate the major pain point, but who knows if that's in their plans.
