Failing MS120?

Post by russellhltn »

I've had two Meraki MS120-8 port switches in the stake fail in as many months.

I'm just wondering what others are seeing.

Do you know why the switches failed?

I've had 3 fail across two different Stake Centers I look after. I have another two switches that I'm suspicious of that might be on their way out.
My issue is normally due to overheating, even with recommended spacing around the switches, it just gets to hot here in Australia during summer.
I've also had 2 SPF modules fry too due to heat.
I haven't had of any issues in smaller chapels that only have 2 or 3 WAPs.

I've also tried to warned my FM that one switch we recently replaced will probably overheat again due to having 6 WAP's plugged into the main switch and 5 other non manage switches. This Stake Center is only 5 years old and was built with exhaust fans for the room to keep air moving through the room that has the rack in it, but the MS120 switch still overheated.

I've been trying to recommend to my FM to get the 24port meraki switch model that has fans to keep the device cooler and would also reduce the amount of switches we have but because it works, they don't see the need to replace it as it's working, so I'm now going to try getting the Stake President to see if he can ask the FM to get this replaced before the switch dies again as it's already started to have the early symptoms that it had when it died the last time (ie locking up and not responding to the CNM Portal and having to power everything off in the rack for a few mintues and turning it back on)

I first thought it could be a network loop as the solar panel installers had been in the rack to install a cable for remote monitoring (only myself and the FM only have a key to the rack) but I couldn't find a network loop after tracing all the cables and double checking with the Global Service Center to make sure they couldn't see a loop being detected on the Meraki Portal.

We also had issues with the switch intermittently loosing the internet in different parts of the building. The main area was on network devices. There are 5 WAP's connected to the switch, but as mentioned before the main issue was affecting the wired network. Trying to convince Facilities that there issue was an uphill struggle. Eventually convinced them that there was an issue and they sent a contractor with a 24 port switch, who incidentally agreed with my diagnosis, as soon as I explained the symptoms! We have had no further problems since the replacement switch fitted!
