{{tempmain|Mobile Gospel Library Project}}
Use this template to include the an index of the major Mobile Gospel Library project articles within the wiki. The index will appear at the top right corner of the article page.

=== Categorization ===
Pages that include this template will be automatically included in the [[:Category:Mobile Gospel Library]] (unless you supply the "category=" parameter).

=== Usage ===
Simply insert the template at the top of the article by typing '''<nowiki>{{MobileGospelLibraryIndex}}</nowiki>'''.

Jcarroll: /* Outdated content */ Clarified language (removed "if you created a project page", which is irrelevant)

These '''guidelines''' will create consistency for additions and corrections to the LDSTech wiki.

== Creating new articles ==
An '''article''' in this wiki should be similar to an encyclopedia article. It should cover a single topic, and should stand on its own (although it may and generally should link to other articles). Topics may be very broad, or quite specific.

=== Appropriate content ===
All pages (including uploaded files) should fit within the scope of the wiki: [[Clerks|clerk-related topics]], [[Family Safety]], [[LDSTech|LDSTech projects]], and [[Meetinghouse technology]]. This wiki is '''not''' a place for individuals or units of the Church to upload files or other information that is for the use of only individuals or specific units. No private information (names, phone numbers, email addresses, membership details, etc.) may be posted. And of course, all content should be consistent with Church standards, policies, and doctrine.

=== Article title ===
The '''title''' of the article should be chosen carefully. It should describe the content well, and be a term that others would naturally apply to this content. A user of the wiki can type a title in the '''search box''' of the wiki and click '''Go''' (or press '''Enter''') and go directly to an article if an article with that title exists. Words in titles should not be capitalized, except for the first word and any proper nouns.

If the article title needs to provide context, include the context in parentheses after the title. For example, "Rights and roles (directory)" is distinguished from "Rights and roles (calendar)"; using this convention puts the significant words of the article upfront where they are more visible (as opposed to "Calendar rights and roles").

Do '''not''' use a slash to create subpages to provide context (e.g., "Calendar/Rights and roles") since this wiki reserves the use of subpages in the main namespace for the [[LDSTech:Translation|translation]] procedure; subpages also have the unfortunate effect of obscuring the significant words of a title later in the title where they are not as visible.

Except for [[LDSTech:Translation|translated]] titles, do not use the '''<nowiki>{{DISPLAYTITLE}}</nowiki>''' magic word to change the title, except for capitalization (e.g., a title that starts with a lowercase letter such as "iPhone") and other minor changes. Significantly changing the title using DISPLAYTITLE breaks the convention that the displayed title should match the page name and thus the page link (see the [https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Manual:$wgAllowDisplayTitle#Details MediaWiki documentation]).

=== Before creating a page ===
Before you create a new page, make sure that
* The content is not already covered on another page
* The content is appropriate to the LDSTech wiki
* You have chosen an appropriate title

=== Introduction ===
Every wiki article should begin with a brief introduction. This allows readers to know at a glance the subject matter of the article. Where it is reasonable, the title of the article (or the significant words from the title) should appear early in the article (preferably at the very beginning) and should be '''bolded'''. Look at the introduction to this article for an example.

The introduction should not have any heading (such as "Overview" or "Summary"); since an introduction has no heading, it will appear at the very top of the article, before the table of contents, which makes it appropriately prominent.

=== Point of view ===
All articles should be written in third person. There may be situations, particularly for [[:Category:Projects|projects]], where an individual may report an experience or take responsibility for an action item. In such situations, do not use first person, and never sign your name (as you would with a discussion page). Instead, use a link to your username (e.g., <code><nowiki>[[User:Aebrown|Aebrown]]</nowiki></code>) and refer to yourself in the third person (e.g., "[[User:Aebrown|Aebrown]] will report back on the decision of the executive team").

== Editing pages ==
The content of the wiki makes progress because many users make contributions, from making simple spelling corrections to adding new articles. Be bold so that you move the project forward, but don't be hasty -- sloppy edits will just create more work for others and lower the quality of the wiki.

=== Use Preview ===
Before you click '''Save page''' to save your changes, use the '''Show preview''' button to see how your changes will actually appear. This can help save you from posting content with obvious errors.

=== Make changes at one time ===
Use the preview button liberally as you are creating a page or making edits. Whenever possible, make all your changes to a page in a single session. If you save the page often, you will needlessly clutter the history of the page and fill up the '''recent changes''' log with many entries. This makes it more difficult for other users to discover what has actually changed.

=== Headings ===
The [http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Help:Section#Creation_and_numbering_of_sections MediaWiki style guide] suggests avoiding H1 level headings (i.e., <code>= This is an incorrect article heading =</code>) in your articles, as those type of headings are used for the article titles. All article sub-headings should begin with H2 level headings (i.e., <code>== This is a correct article heading ==</code>) and then go downwards from there. Words in headings should not be capitalized, except for the first word and any proper nouns. Headings should not include wikilinks or any wikitext (see Wikipedia article on [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:ACCESS#Links links]).

=== Links ===
Links (both wikilinks and external links) should be attached to text that is a natural part of the article. Avoid the common blog practice of putting links around the word "here."
* '''Incorrect''': Read the MediaWiki Handbook [http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Help:Contents here].
* '''Correct''': Read the [http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Help:Contents MediaWiki Handbook].

=== Minor edits ===
As you save your changes after editing a page, there is a check box labeled "This is a minor edit." As explained in the [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/How_to_edit#Minor_edits Wikipedia article on minor edits], these are to be used only for "typo corrections, formatting and presentational changes, rearranging of text without modifying content, etc. A minor edit is a version that the editor believes requires no review and could never be the subject of a dispute." Any addition of new content can never be a minor edit, even if it is not a lot of text.

=== Categories ===
Every article should be in at least one category. Generally you add a category by adding something like '''<nowiki>[[Category:Android applications]]</nowiki>'''. As with article titles and headings, categories should not use title case. In general, when a subcategory is included, the parent category is not explicitly included (e.g., since [[:Category:Community Services SSO]] is a subcategory of [[:Category:Community Services]], an article in the ''Community Services SSO'' category would not be explicitly included in the ''Community Services'' category).

Before you create a new category, check to see if a similar category exists (see the [[Special:Categories|list of all categories]]), and follow existing naming conventions where possible.

=== Style guide ===
For consistent formatting and usage of common words and concepts, please reference the [[LDSTech:Manual of Style|style guide]].

=== Changing the title ===
If you need to change the title of an article, do not simply create a new article and copy the content from the old page to the new page. Instead, use the MediaWiki '''[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:How_to_rename_(move)_a_page Move]''' feature (one of the top tabs). '''Move''' lets you specify a new title for the page, then moves the content and the associated talk page to the new page, and finally edits the old page to be a redirect to the new page. This is far easier than doing it manually. It also keeps the discussion page with the new title, which is generally desirable, and leaves a clearer history of the actual title change.

== Discussion pages ==
Each article has a '''discussion page''' or '''talk page'''. These pages provide a forum for the community to come to a consensus as to the direction a particular article should take. If there is anything at all controversial about a change you have made or think ought to be made, start a discussion using the discussion pages.

You should '''never''' put discussion, questions, or comments in the body of articles. Discussion should be limited to the discussion page.

=== Topics ===
Discussion pages can be organized into topics. This is particularly helpful for articles that have multiple sections and thus may have ongoing discussion related to different sections.

If you are responding to a particular question, use one or more colons to indent your response so that it is clear what comment or question you are responding to.

=== Sign your name ===
You can easily sign your name by adding four tildes to the end of your comment. This will add your username and a time stamp. You can use three tildes for just your name or five tildes for just the timestamp, but the preferred signature uses four tildes to include both. The appearance of your username is determined by the preferences you have set. Comments in discussion pages should always be signed, but signatures should not be placed in articles.

== Add sources ==
Although opinions and personal ideas can be helpful, statements purported to be official Church policy will be more effective if backed up from [[official sources]]. You may want to use the [http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:Cite/Cite.php#Usage Cite extension] to document the reference to the source.

== Formatting code ==
The wiki provides options for formatting inline code or blocks of code. For inline code elements, use the '''<nowiki><tt></nowiki>''' or '''<nowiki><code></nowiki>''' tag; for multi-line blocks of code, use the '''<nowiki><pre></nowiki>''' tag or the Syntax Highlighting extension.

=== Inline code elements ===
For formatting inline code, such as references to variables, methods, filenames, or other code elements, use the '''<nowiki><tt></nowiki>''' or '''<nowiki><code></nowiki>''' tag. Each of these will produce text in a monospaced font.

=== Syntax Highlighting ===
We have Syntax Highlighting on the wiki so that if you paste source code snippets, they will show up with highlights. The [http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:SyntaxHighlight_GeSHi MediaWiki SyntaxHighlight extension documentation] explains how to use syntax highlighting for your source code (including Java, HTML, SQL, XML, and many more). Here's a simple example:

{| border=1
! WikiText !! Result
|-
|<pre><source lang="java">
{
// Here is a comment
System.out.println("Hello, World!");
int m = 3 * 4;
}
</source>
</pre>
|<source lang="java">
{
// Here is a comment
System.out.println("Hello, World!");
int m = 3 * 4;
}
</source>
|-
|}
{{-}}

== Translation ==
{{main|LDSTech:Translation}}
To translate pages into languages other than English, follow the documented [[LDSTech:Translation|translation]] procedure, which will insure consistent linking between different language versions of articles.

==Outdated content==
If a project is no longer active and the information no longer needed, the project page should be removed from the wiki. Deleting a page requires administrative permission, so please add a note on the page indicating that it is no longer needed. You can also contact a wiki administrator, such as [[user:Johnsonth]] or [[user:Aebrown]].

== Use templates to flag questionable or incomplete content ==
If you come across an article that needs to be edited or should be deleted, you can flag the article by inserting a template. To do this, simply edit the article and insert the text '''<nowiki>{{Template_Name|Parameter}}</nowiki>'''. The parameters for a template are documented on the template page, which you can examine by going to the appropriate template page: '''<nowiki>Template:Template_Name</nowiki>'''.

=== Template:Edit ===
Use the {{tl|Edit}} template if you find a page that requires editing, but you don't have the time or skill to edit it. This template may be inserted at the top of the page if it applies to the entire page, or at the beginning of a section if it only applies to that section. It has a parameter that is a brief description of what needs to be corrected. For example, the annotation
<pre>{{Edit|Eliminate first person from this section}}</pre>
would result in a box appearing in the text as follows:
{{Edit|Eliminate first person from this section|category=}}

=== Template:Delete ===
Use the {{tl|Delete}} template to flag a page for deletion. For example, the annotation
<pre>{{Delete|This page is spam}}</pre>
would result in a box appearing in the text as follows:
{{Delete|This page is spam|category=}}

=== Template:Draft ===
Use the {{tl|Draft}} template for policy or guideline pages that are in a draft stage (do not confuse this with {{tl|stub}} which is used for incomplete pages or {{tl|Under construction}}). This template should be inserted at the top of the page. It has a parameter that is a brief description of the reason for the draft status. For example, the annotation
<pre>{{Draft|Waiting for approval}}</pre>
would result in a box appearing in the text as follows:
{{Draft|Waiting for approval|category=}}

=== Template:Need Input ===
Use the {{tl|Need Input}} template when a particular issue in an article or discussion requires additional information, clarification, or collaboration. Indicate what is needed with a brief description of the issue or ask a question. For example, the annotation
<pre>{{Need Input|Should Bishops be able to assign responsibility for a household to a quorum?}}</pre>
would result in a box appearing in the text as follows:
{{Need Input|Should Bishops be able to assign responsibility for a household to a quorum?|category=}}

All too frequently record keepers learn their responsibilities through a haphazard process of on-the-job trial and error. Below are checklists to ensure that members with record-keeping responsibilities are properly oriented, trained (even "certified", if you like), as qualified to perform their callings well.

The clerk wiki is a valuable resource packed with information, but a newly called clerk needs a guide (a simple lesson plan, really) to navigate the content, moving from basic to more complex concepts, in an order that makes sense. The checklists below could follow the order found in the designs of the [https://clerksupport.lds.org record-keeping and technology support training] on lds.org, but this is not a requirement.

Each item in the checklist should be brief. Do not try to explain policies and procedures here. Simply link from an item in the checklist to the explanation in an appropriate content source (another wiki page, an online lesson, a notice, or some other document). If the explanation isn't available, start a new page for it. As these checklists grow we can create individual pages for each.

The '''Community Portal''' is the central place to find out what's happening on the [[Main_Page | LDSTech Wiki]] (see the [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Community_portal Community Portal] on [[Wikipedia:Main_Page|Wikipedia]] for a model). Learn what tasks need to be done, or get or post news about recent events or current activities. If you think something should be done, add it to the lists here, even if you don't have the time or expertise to create the content yourself.

=== News ===
I'd like to start reviewing the content on the wiki to make sure it's up to date. There are about 1,000 pages on this wiki. One problem is that there's no ownership of the content, so people can create a page, then leave it alone while it becomes outdated, irrelevant, and full of errors. Meanwhile, the page's original creator has moved on to different roles and projects.

My approach may seem somewhat manual, but I'd like to start somewhere. Maybe this strategy will work:
# Approach each portal categorization first.
# Create a spreadsheet of each page in the portal.
# E-mail likely page owners asking them if the content is up to date.
# If the page owner is unknown, add a review tag on the page requesting a review.
# If the review is ignored, add a delete tag on the page.
# After one week, delete the page.

=== Tasks ===
Here are some tasks you can do:

* '''Request''': If you have an idea for a helpful article or wiki feature, but don't have time or ability or inclination to create it, record the idea in [[LDSTech:New wiki content requests|new wiki content requests]].
* '''Wikify''': Follow the [[LDSTech:Guidelines|guidelines]] to make articles use links, headings, sources, templates, and categories in a standard way.
* '''Annotate''': Use templates to flag articles that need attention if you are unable to make the necessary changes.
** {{tl|Stub}} flags articles or sections that are incomplete and need to be expanded
** {{tl|Draft}} flags articles that are in a Draft stage and not approved as authoritative yet
** {{tl|Edit}} flags articles or sections that need to be rewritten
** {{tl|ToDo}} flags articles or sections that have tasks that need to be accomplished
** {{tl|Need Input}} flags articles or sections that are in need of input
** {{tl|Unresolved}} flags Talk Page discussions that are currently unresolved
** {{tl|Resolved}} flags Talk Page discussions that have been resolved
** {{tl|Under construction}} flags pages (for a brief time) pages that are undergoing major construction
* '''Create''': If there is a topic you think needs to be addressed, create a new article. If your page is related to a project, please follow the [[Development Project Guidelines]]. Also, a red link anywhere on this wiki indicates that someone thought an article ''should'' exist, but they didn't have the time or expertise to write it themselves. If you can, get that topic started by writing the first draft yourself. You can see the entire list of such articles at [[Special:Wantedpages]]; also see [[LDSTech:New wiki content requests|New wiki content requests]] for additional desired articles.
* '''Expand''': Some articles may be incomplete stubs which should be improved by fleshing out the content. You can see the entire list of such articles at [[:Category:Stubs]].
* '''Resource''': Add attachments or links to sample documents, spreadsheets, or templates that will add breadth and depth to the articles.
* '''Copyedit''': Fix grammar, punctuation, style to be more accurate, and in accordance with the [[LDSTech:Manual of Style|LDSTech Style Guide]].
* '''Source''': Although opinions and personal ideas can be helpful, statements purported to be official Church policy will be more effective if backed up from [[official sources]].
* '''See also''': Adding "See also" sections to the end of articles can improve navigation
* '''Add missing standard pages''': Several pages have standard links in the user interface of the wiki, but have not been written yet. These include:
** '''[[LDSTech:Copyrights]]''': Write/Edit this page, which is linked to from the Editing page that appears whenever you edit a page; this should briefly explain Public Domain, Fair Use, and improper use of copyrighted materials.
** '''[[Help:Editing]]''': Write/Edit this page, which is linked to from the Editing page that appears whenever you edit a page; this should give help with the actual editing process, and link to the [[Guidelines]] page and other helpful existing pages. Currently this simply redirects to [[Help:Contents]].
* '''User page''': Add your own [http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Help:User_page user page] to give people some idea of your background and experience. A user page also gives you a place to create your own sandbox using [http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Help:Subpages subpages].

Anyone can add to this page any '''requests for new content''' on the LDSTech wiki. This wiki is always a work in progress. Sometimes contributors will notice that something is missing, or think of a new topic that would be very helpful. This page provides a place to quickly capture those ideas, especially when the person with the idea can't make the changes personally for any reason.

People who have time and expertise to contribute content are welcome to come here and help fulfill some of these requests. Once a topic has been added to the wiki, it should be removed from this page.

Feel free to discuss the merits of any of these suggestions on the [[LDSTech_talk:New Content Requests|discussion page]].

== New clerk content ==
Add bullet points below regarding new topics that should be added to the wiki.

* [[Language]] issues in MLS: [[Changing the Language Setting in MLS]] explains how to run MLS in a different language, but we should also explain how to print forms and certificates in a different language (without changing the MLS language). This could go in that same article (but broaden the title), or in a separate article. There may also be some language-specific issues related to MLS Exports (see {{LDSTech|post=35775}}).
* [[Local Unit Website]]: Break this article into a user-oriented page and an administrator page. The administration page could then spawn additional detailed articles. For example, resource scheduling could be its own topic, as well as [http://tech.lds.org/forum/showthread.php?t=3105 How to get members to use LUWS].
* [[Stake President]] and [[Bishop]] currently redirect to [[Leaders' responsibilities for record keeping]]. But there have been discussions on LDSTech forums such as [http://tech.lds.org/forum/showthread.php?t=1244 New Stake Presidency] about what clerks need to do, especially in the technology realm, to help get new stake presidencies and bishops acquainted with Church systems and get the proper access. This would apply to new clerks as well. It would be helpful to capture this "getting started" information.
* [[Executive secretary]] article contains only a brief outline of responsibilities. There is a surprising dearth of training information for executive secretaries. It would be nice to flesh out some information that would be much more helpful to new executive secretaries. One particular item would be explaining the MLS Action and Interview List.
* [[Members without callings]]: This MLS report has several options, and how to use it is not clear to all clerks. See {{LDSTech|thread=3690|title=Members Without Callings List}}.
* [[Agent ward expenses]]: Document how financial clerks might account for expenses when wards share a building.

== New projects ==
* [[Subversion]] article could gather the information on SVN scattered throughout the [[:Category:Projects]] pages. Then it would be a simple link in each project page that tells how to check out source code so we wouldn't have to repeat that info. It could combine or reference the following:
*# Little note in [[Mobile_Scriptures_Windows_Mobile#How to check out and build the project]]
*# [[Checking_Out_a_LDS_Java_Stack_Project_with_Eclipse#Install_the_Subclipse_plugin]]
*# [[Subversion_Change_to_Dev]]
* [[Jira]] article would be similar to the [[Subversion]] article in that it would explain what Jira is (with link to the Atlassian site), how to get authorization, distinction between internal Jira and external. Then project pages wouldn't have to duplicate that information -- they could just link to the [[Jira]] article and provide the specific URL.

== New wiki features ==
Add bullet points below regarding changes to the structure of the wiki, or guidelines or procedures, such as templates or categories.

* Add template for references to the Church Handbook of Instructions (CHI)
* Add [http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:InterWiki InterWiki] [[Wikipedia:Wikipedia:InterWikimedia_links|linking]] between https://wiki.familysearch.org/en/ using something like: <code><nowiki>[[FamilySearch:]]</nowiki></code> or <code><nowiki>[[FS:]]</nowiki></code>.

== Other ==
Add bullet points below for any other suggestions that do not fit the above topics.

Jcarroll: Formatting only: Added emphasis to key points

{{communityprojecthandbook}}
The Community Project Handbook provides guidance to project leaders, volunteers, and other community members engaged in the LDSTech community effort. This handbook compiles an ongoing set of principles and best practices intended to demystify, improve, and advance community projects. Because this is a wiki, you can add your own tips and experiences to this ongoing, growing handbook.

At the heart of the handbook are two main sections: one for project managers, and one for volunteers. You'll notice that the instruction for project managers appears before the instruction for volunteers. There's a purpose behind this arrangement. The number one reason community projects fail is not due to lack of volunteer resources or talent. A project's failure or success depends on ''how the project manager guides the project and volunteer efforts''.

To be successful, '''project managers need to understand the dynamics of managing remotely located, part-time volunteers with varying interests, backgrounds, and schedules.''' As such, the rules for managing community projects differ significantly from managing internal projects with on-site, paid employees. Hence the justification for this guide.

Likewise, volunteers also need to understand the dynamics of community projects. Too many projects stagnate with volunteers who join and wait to be engaged. While project managers should reach out and welcome new volunteers, recognize that the more hand-holding and guidance you need, the more management overhead your participation requires.

At some point, if the management overhead is too high, project managers begin to question the value of the community effort. Therefore '''it is critical that volunteers be proactive, self-guiding, and willing to step up even when not specifically directed to do so.''' Most projects should have ample information on their wiki pages and a list of items to tackle in JIRA. Don't wait for an invitation -- jump in and act.

We recognize that not all projects are run the same way, of course. Some projects may not rely on many of these principles. Others, such as testing projects, which have hundreds of volunteers, will not find it practical to reach out and individually welcome new volunteers.

Even so, these principles and guidelines apply generally and will help you be successful with your community endeavors. As you learn how to better manage your projects, please share what works for you so that others -- both project managers and volunteers -- can benefit.

== Suggestion: Icons to represent each degree of privacy ==

The new privacy settings are welcome and a good improvement to the directory. I recommend that we use some simple, grayscale icons similar to those below to represent the three levels of privacy:
# [[File:Icon-priesthood-leader.PNG|16px]] Leaders only
# [[File:Icon-home.PNG|16px]] Ward
# [[File:Icon-meeting-house.PNG|16px]] Stake
Rolling over the icon would give a text tip explaining the meaning. This suggestion is patterned after the icons used on Facebook and Google+: a beach ball for publicly visible, a padlock for "only me", etc.

The icons above were taken from the LDS Maps application:
== Access Table for Messaging? ==

Who has access to the [https://lds.org/messaging/?lang=eng "Send a Message" tool] on the [https://lds.org/leader?lang=eng Leader Resources] website? Is it possible to grant access to certain people (or callings)? In our ward, we assumed it would be all Ward Council members, but it appears that this is not the default. Currently, our ward executive secretary is asked to send out emails on behalf of other ward leaders, and he'd like to delegate this to members of the Ward Council. We're mindful of spam, but we're trying to figure out who is capable of doing what under the current system.

Today I noticed that the [https://lds.org/mls/mbr/access-table.html?lang=eng Access Table] has been updated; I'm glad to see improvements in this feature. Will you please add an entry for who has access to send email from the "Messaging" tool, along with all the roles that have access to this tool?

A more general question: Where can I subscribe to receive updates on Messaging development? Obviously, I can subscribe to this Page in the wiki; but is there an "announce-only" email list to which I could subscribe? Could I get read-only access to the JIRA account for this project?
Thank you. --[[User:Jcarroll|Jcarroll]] 01:58, 16 June 2011 (UTC)
